What to Tell Family Members Who Don't Believe in Psychiatric Medication

As a psychiatrist, I often see patients who are struggling with mental health conditions, but whose family members don't believe in taking psychiatric medication. This can be a very frustrating situation for both the patient and the family.

Here are a few things that I would say to family members who don't believe in psychiatric medication:

  • Mental health conditions are real medical illnesses. They are not caused by a lack of willpower or weakness. They are caused by changes in the brain, just like any other medical illness.

  • Psychiatric medication can be an effective treatment for mental health conditions. It is not the only treatment, but it can be very helpful in many cases.

  • The risks of taking psychiatric medication are often overstated. The vast majority of people who take psychiatric medication do not experience serious side effects.

  • The benefits of taking psychiatric medication can be life-changing. Medication can help people to feel better, function better, and live more fulfilling lives.

If you are a family member of someone who is struggling with a mental health condition, I encourage you to talk to your loved one about their treatment options. Be open-minded and willing to learn about the benefits of psychiatric medication. You may be surprised at how much it can help.

Here are some additional resources that you may find helpful:

  • The National Alliance on Mental Illness: https://www.nami.org/

  • The American Psychiatric Association: https://www.psychiatry.org/

  • The American Psychological Association: https://www.apa.org/

I hope this helps.
